Our Funding Approach

The Foundation requires organizations interested in applying to fit within clearly defined parameters and demonstrate the ability to achieve measurable impact.

The Roy A. Hunt Foundation has two main vehicles for funding:

  • Initiative Grants/Giving Circles – The Trustees work in committees and Giving Circles to invite and review proposals for larger grants focused on specific results. The Initiatives include: Community Development, the Environment, Youth Violence Prevention, and International Development, and our Giving Circles: Community Farming, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and Veterans. Initiative grants are typically in the range of $20,000-$75,000. (Please see the Initiatives’ individual pages for their specific guidelines.)
  • Trustee-Sponsored General Grants – Trustees personally invite proposals for General Grants. Grantees are typically organizations serving the communities in which Trustees live or work, organizations for which family members have volunteered, or schools they have attended. Most grants are for general operating support or direct service programs and range from $5,000-$10,000. The Foundation adds very few new organizations to this category each year.

Please review our How We Fund section to determine if your 501 (c)(3) charitable organization fits the Foundation’s grantmaking interests.

If your review confirms your organization may qualify for a grant, your next step is to submit a brief Letter of Inquiry (LOI), if your organization:

  • Has never received any type of grant from the Foundation, or
  • Would like to be considered for an Initiative Grant, or
  • Previously received a Trustee-Sponsored General Grant, but has not been funded in the past two years

If you aren’t sure of the answers to those points, contact us at info@rahuntfdn.org or 412.281.8734.
